Camp Costly

This is typical DoD wasteful spending. Officers at the field grade ranks are given a budget and told to spend; nobody cares how they spend it as long as all of the money is spent and it is accounted for on a neat PowerPoint.

Still trying to make good on President Obama's vow to shut the detention camp at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, within a year of taking office, an interagency team from the Pentagon, Justice and Homeland Security departments visited a maximum security prison in Standish, Mich. on Thursday to evaluate whether it could be used as a combination courtoom-lockup for 229 al Qaeda, Taliban and other foreign fighters now in U.S. custody...

But the prospect of turning Michigan into what one congressman called a "terrorist penal colony" is bringing out the NIMBY spirit -- and posing some delicate political calculations for elected officials.

Guantánamo Ire Provokes Senate Threats

The same problems with closing Guantanamo Bay still exist today that did during the reign of George II. Prisoners need a trial and, if convicted, need to serve their jail sentence somewhere.

The latter, in my mind, poses the biggest roadblock to closing Guantanamo Bay. No American wants a convicted terrorist in their neighborhood prison. Instead of NIMBY activism against the green agenda, we are/will be faced with NIMBY activism against convicted terrorists in the local maximum security prison. Local, of course, meaning rural since most maximum security prisoners are not on Park Avenue surrounded by a major population, which plays well to the base of the GOP.
