A new dawn for State

State’s new missions require it to perform an array of tasks the military conducted prior to now. The two causing the most concern: State’s ability to train the Iraqi police and to keep its own people safe.

U.S. Foreign Service officers worry aloud about the security issue, fearing that without proper security they will be unable to do their jobs in the field. They could become the new “FOBbits” — military parlance for “hobbits” who rarely leave the forward operating bases on which they live...
