Musharraf Resigns

Pervez Musharraf
(Who just so happened to be an artillery officer...)

With the announcement that Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf is resigning, Pakistani democracy can continue to move forward. After being a stagnant democracy for years, Pakistan's democracy has developed quite a bit in less than one year. First, Musharraf stepped down as Army Chief of Staff in October 2007 thereby freeing up one of the two (military officers, politicians) traditional power bases in the country. General Kayani, a career intelligence officer, took control of the Army and seems like a good choice for an intelligence driven battle in the Northwest Frontier Province. Next, and this is quite controversial and debatable, the assassination of Benazir Bhutto may have pushed democracy forward by forcing new leaders to emerge rather than relying on the Bhutto family whose detractors have charged them with corruption for decades. Now, with Musharraf resigning, Pakistan will have a strong Army Chief and, hopefully, a strong President without many military ties so that Pakistan can rely on both traditional power bases rather than a fusion of them (e.g. Musharraf as Army Chief and President).
