Abkhazia

ABKHAZIA FAST FACTS:

1. Broke away from Georgia during 1992-1993 war
2. Declared independence from Georgia in 1999
3. Many Abkhazs have cultural, linguistic, and historical ties to the people of the Russian North Caucasus
4. Georgian President Saakashvili has vowed to restore Georgian territorial integrity to include Abkhazia and South Ossentia. Saakashvili has been angered by Russia's creeping annexation by propping up separatist states.
5. A Russian brigade invades Georgia from Abkhazia in Aug. 2008.
