Warriors to Bureaucrats: Why Officers Start Out to be Sam Damon and end up Courtney Massengale

Great thesis done by COL(R) Tom Rendall while a student at the Army War College. It talks about many of the problems with the Army Officer Corps in the Sam Damon v. Courtney Massengale context. Instead of being reprimanded for writing such a piece, COL Rendall was given an award for it at graduation, by GEN Shinseki in 2000...

Today, the problems he spoke of in his thesis have been excerbated by the current conflict in Iraq. Hopefully, GEN Petraeus' selection of a new crop of one-stars will help clean house at the top so that they in turn can help get rid of the hollow corps of field grade officers just figuring out how to fight a counterinsurgency after almost 7 years of conflict...
